Overpaying for ineffective vets and stifling the development of your young players is just dumb. The Flames did that for way too long. You need to find a balance. There's absolutely no reason that players like Zary, Coronato, Pelletier, etc... weren't getting more (or any) playing time in the last couple of years.
The best teams often have several contributing players on ELCs, and that's how they become the best teams, as they have cap to spend (wisely) elsewhere.
