Hanifin:

It's a square with 4 quadrants.

A) You keep Hanifan if he is signing for less than his worth and the returns suck
B) Think about it if Hanifan is signing for less and the returns are good
C) You trade Hanifan if he is signing for more than he is worth and the packages are great
d) You think about it if Hanifan is signing for more and the packages suck.

Overriding this completely, is what Hanifin is willing to do. Is he even willing to stay here?

I am certainly leaning towards trading him, and I imagine the market is really strong for him too, I am not very worried about being forced into a poor decision. Either Hanifan signs here and the deal is fair for both sides, or he is traded for a good return. Either option is great, really, even if my preference is on trading him.

Tanev:

Tanev is "Trade him to the highest bidder". If Ottawa has any hope of signing him, they pretty much have to be the highest bidder at this stage, and use the time to court him, otherwise there are zero reasons why Tanev would sign there, and I would also assume that it is highly unlikely that he even becomes a UFA, as the team that trades for him will likely extend him.

Markstrom:

McElhinney, Brossoit, McDonald, Berra, Ramo, Hiller, Elliott, Toskala, Turek, Noodles, Boucher, Sauve, Keetley, Joseph, Karlsson, Taylor, Johnson, Rittich, Lack, Smith, Zagidulin, Vladar, Medvedev, Spratt, Schneider, Lalande, Irving, Ortio, Gillies, McDonald, Parsons, Wolf, Chechelev, Sergeev and Yegorov. Plus more that I missed, I am sure.

Flames are NOT going to give Markstrom away when you look at the above. How many goalies have they gone through? How many terrible goalies have they signed that didn't pan out and it cost the Flames wins? How much assets have the Flames spent on trading for goalies that didn't work out? How much draft capital have they spent drafting goalies, and trying to develop them, without them panning out?

Maybe you are one of the FEW who dislike Markstrom. Fine. Pick a goalie from the list I provided that has been a better goalie for the organization. There isn't one. I liked a few on that list, but Markstrom has been the best of the bunch, and it really hasn't been close. Vernon - Kipprusoff - Markstrom - there's your top 3 goaltenders.

Yes, it doesn't make sense to keep Markstrom around - except that he can really help develop Wolf. That's value. Flames need one single team to bid on Markstrom to kick-start a bidding war - the Flames are the other team. Either the offer is good enough, or they keep him. Next year you see what happens. I would love to trade Markstrom before the deadline personally as I think the return will be substantial, but there is no rush. I am enjoying the fact that the goalies aren't losing games by themselves. This is the most interesting asset to keep an eye on. I bet he moves. If he doesn't, that's ok.
