Personally I like looking at 5v5 performance for d-men because the PP skews production heavily.

Over the last three years at 5v5 (Team Rank / League Rank)

TOI: 3694: 19 (1st / 21st)
Goals: 19 (1st / T-18th)
Points: 72 (1st / T-19th)
Shots: 356 (1st / 18th)
Corsi %: 53.1%
xGF %: 54.5%

Looking at the 5v5 points specifically:

1) Karlsson - $11.5M
2) Josi - $9.0M
3) Makar - $9.0M
4) Hedman - $7.8M
5) Hughes - $7.8M
6) Toews - $7.25M
7) Faulk - $6.5M
8) Morrissey - $6.25M
9) Dunn - $7.35M
10) Fox - $9.5M
11) Skjei - $5.25M
12) Dahlin - $11.0M
13) Forsling - ???
14) Dobson - $4.0M (2025 - RFA)
15) Reilly - $7.5M
16) Letang - $6.1M
17) Bouchard - $3.9M (2025 - RFA)
18) Weegar - $6.25M
19) Hanifin - ???
20) Burns - $8.00M
21) McAvoy - $9.5M
22) Slavin - $5.3M (2025 UFA)
23) Sergachev - $8.5M
24) Andersson - $4.55M (2026 UFA)
25) Heiskanen - $8.5M

Flames are probably trying to use guys like Dunn, Toews, Hughes as comparables that are around $7.5M...while Hanifin's camp would point to Sergachev, Heiskanen, McAvoy etc.

I still feel like $8.0M is a stretch for Hanifin on the open market but looking at it more I think $7.5M is likely doable on a 7 year deal in UFA for sure.

Worst things to build around than a Hanifin-Weegar, Kylington-Andersson d-core. (Also that Weegar deal was a great signing and sometimes gets overlooked because the Huberdeau contract is bad).
Yes, his 5on5 production is good. But that's only part of the equation. All the guys on that list that are getting big money, also provide PP production. If he doesn't, he shouldn't get the same money.
