Since 1979 is apparently ancient history around here, lets use the last smooth skating defenceman the Flames let walk in T.J. Brodie. At 33 he's been trending down hard. Why isn't modern medicine saving him?

Brodie is still playing over 21 minutes a game. He's also not trending down. He hasn't had a good offensive year since 2018/19. He's been flat since then.
Brodie's problem was that he had some of the skills of top pairing defencemen but just wasn't very good in that role, unless paired with Norris calibre partner. He's a complimentary player, not a difference maker. Always has been. Flames fans weren't especially upset to lose him, because we knew how incomplete of a player he was. TML favs got excited at first, but that was always going to be temporary.
There's a reason why Brodie always signed middling contracts. He's currently at the end of a 4 years and $5 million contract. Probably just about right for what he brings. He's not an eight year guy. Once again, a bit of an apples and oranges scenario.
