I don't think Putin has the economy, the assets, or the willpower to really grow this conflict. This war will set Russia back decades in terms of needing to get back on their feet not to mention the geopolitical goodwill they have lost. Their army has shrunk immensely and their remaining equipment would get absolutely decimated by any number of the strongest militaries out there.
