Lose them?
Trade them!
Why pay for UFA years.
Draft well and max out RFA contracts but then sell when they become UFA pending and don't sign other UFA players.
Keep a continual pipeline of picks and prospects coming into the team.
Add two rookies every year should be the goal so moving out pending UFA for younger players, prospects, and picks should be the goal.
Build a team around three lines of second line talent players and draft for home run opportunities in the rounds 3-7. Goal should be to have 4 picks in the first three rounds every year. Draft for great not good and serviceable.
If you have the pipeline of picks and prospects you will be able to outbid when a superstar becomes available.
When you have a top 10 team that competes to make the final four every year you can adjust the UFA rule to allow to sign or retain players that are top 5% (top 40) in the league. Unless they are that level why take them when you can have the cap space and the younger players.
