Would be fantastic to get a player like Mercer. I really doubt that will happen though… I can’t remember the last time any team traded a young roster player that was a former first round pick that is still on pace to develop into a solid 2nd line/1st line player. It just does not happen often anymore. And that ok… I’ll be very happy to focus on getting first round picks as the centrepiece of any trades.
I know many like to call them “magic beans” but I don’t care… they won’t feel like “magic beans” if the flames are able to package multiple late first round/second round picks to hopefully move up in the draft and potentially make two picks in the top half of the first round. The flames seem to be doing much better over the last few years with amateur scouting and with developing players… I’ll be happy to see them trust their scouting instead of prioritizing getting former picks of other teams.
