No point getting angry over the trade that Treliving did. Montreal leveraged their cap space well, and ended up with two first round picks and a conditional second (edit: Oops, conditional 3rd). That's weaponizing cap space.


I hope that Conroy finds this kind of an opportunity. He is being prudent with retention so far, and publicly saying that the premium wasn't enough to retain on anybody thus far. Keep being prudent, and hopefully this type of a move materializes for the Flames, or teams will pony-up assets to retain on the expected players being shipped out, or acting as a middleman.


The one good thing I know Conroy will do is not eat up all the cap space at once. Look to retain now, look for a cap dump in the off-season. Would be nice to have the Florida pick on top of the pile of assets that the Flames will have, but it is gone. I hope he finds an equal or even better opportunity.
