Now the Flames have to make decisions on fellow pending UFAs Chris Tanev and Noah Hanifin. My understanding is the Flames still want to re-sign Hanifin and are trying to do so, but at some point, they will have to fish or cut bait there ahead of March 8. And while it’s more likely Tanev gets traded, I think the Flames cherish the veteran blueliner so much for everything he brings on and off the ice that you shouldn’t close the door on Calgary having at least one more contract conversation with him, too.
But I think Tanev gets dealt in the end. (Vancouver, by the way, tried hard to have him included in the Lindholm trade, but the price point was too high). There are just too many teams with interest. The general price tag right now from Calgary is a second-round pick plus another asset, according to league sources. If a team would be willing to jump up to a first-round pick, they’d probably get Tanev now.
It just so happens the Maple Leafs, who very much covet Tanev, don’t have a second-round pick. In fact, the Leafs don’t have a second-round pick for the next three drafts. But they do have a first-round pick in this June’s draft. There’s no doubt in my mind that if Leafs GM Brad Treliving wants to be reunited with Tanev, he’s going to have to pay that price. And maybe he just won’t. But there are both playoff and non-playoff teams that have shown interest in Tanev. There isn’t a single player on the Flames roster who’s generated more interest since the start of the season, and that includes Lindholm.
The other thing to consider with Calgary is goalie Jacob Markstrom, who turned 34 on Wednesday. He’s got a full no-move clause and completely controls his future. But I do wonder now that his best friend on the team has been traded to Vancouver (which is a bit ironic given that it was Lindholm who helped convince Markstrom to leave the Canucks, spurn the Oilers and sign with the Flames in October 2020), how does he feel about things?
Markstrom’s got two more years on his contract after this season at a $6 million AAV. I believe the Flames have had a few calls on him but nothing serious. This feels like a June trade situation if there’s a trade at all. But again it’s worth asking, given the control the goalie has with his no-move, how does the Lindholm trade affect his mood moving forward?
If the Devils think they have any chance of still making the playoffs (I think they do), they’ve got the cap room with Dougie Hamilton and his $9 million cap hit on long-term injured reserve. Do they take a swing at a Markstrom-Tanev package?
The goalie situation is pressing in New Jersey. Odds are the Devils make a goalie trade ahead of any D trade, from what I can gather. Sources around the league say they do indeed keep calling around on goalies. And I don’t think they’re looking at rentals, either. That’s why Markstrom could be among those on their radar.
Lots to play out still between now and March 8. The Flames got it going for real Wednesday night and they’re far from done.
