Obviously not the sexiest hire for Seattle, but the guy has been with Baltimore for 10 years and Harbaugh, so that by itself speaks volumes, not a guy jumping from team to team to slowly climb a ladder before proving oneself.
Defense was Seattle's identity through the 2010's, though that was helped by PC and JS arriving and creating competition and coaching guys up that were left for scrap by other teams. When the strong secondary finally got some LB and a pass rush, is when they went onto back to back Superbowls.
Defense has been average since Quinn left and they couldn't spend as much on defense with Wilson's contract. Last few years has been terrible and really let the team down at critical points.
Obviously he will bring the defensive, but with all first time coordinators turned head coach, he will need a seasoned OC to help him on that side, but also navigate the head coaching transition.
No one will replace PC with the energy and exhuberance and guy he was to players, and the way the team has operared these last 13 years is around what PC created. That can't instantly go away so hopefully McDonald can make sure the transition to him goes well, and coach and set up a solid defense as he did in Baltimore. Seattle has a lot of resources and a good league reputation to work with.
