I agree with this, but two problems. One, you're going to pay a premium at the deadline. Two, if you're not going into the playoffs and you're targeting a pending UFA, why not just wait until the summer and not give up an assets? You're going to end up paying his market value anyways if you want to retain him before July 1.
The only advantage here is if you want to ensure you have first dibs at him for a new contract, which isn't a guarantee. It's a roll of the dice and it will cost a team a premium.
