It's a no win situation if the player falls the way Kuzmenko has. With hindsight it's easy to say too much, but at the time in those situations you just don't have much choice when a player over performs on their first NHL contract. Canucks would essentially disqualify themselves from future professional free agents coming over from Europe if they cut rope after playing hard ball.
I'd agree with your sentiment more if it was a long term deal, but two years at the cap hit he signed at was reasonable amount even accounting for some regression. That he fell off a cliff was not something you bank on.
