If the Canucks are looking for Lindholm still, and say they can do it with no cap retention/cap dump how much more appealing does that make a deal for him if they do it sooner than later? Giving the Flames more cap space they can weaponize going into the dead line. Does that make a deal more valuable or not really change the equation?
Not requiring retention makes the deal more attractive for the Flames, obviously, but the flip side to that is that it would also (presumably) reduce the return.

The actual cost to the Flames of retaining half his salary (if a trade happened today) would be just under $1M. The cap opportunity equates to roughly $2M in salary. So the question, from the Flames' perspective would be, is the difference between a retention trade, and the trade with the Nucks without retention, worth the difference? Could they make it up, using that $2M of cap space elsewhere?

Tough to say, because there are no guarantees they could redeploy it. If it were my decision, I would go for the best return, period. Presumably that means trade to someone with retention.
