There was originally a criminal investigation in 2019, and the players were cleared. There was a civil suit and a settlement in 2022. You and I both think that the investigation was spectacle, and the settlement was bull####. But, realistically, what are NHL teams to do in these circumstances? The players involved were not on any NHL team when the incident occurred. The unnamed players were exonerated, and then settled with the plaintiff out of court. The teams only know whatever it is the players are willing to disclose. Of course, now that charges are pending, this changes things entirely, and I expect that these five players will never again play an NHL game. But, I think your expectations about what NHL team executives knew, and what they could do about it are just totally unrealistic.
