The assumption that he commands a huge premium because he's not getting dealt as a rental is a faulty one. That only works if the team can afford him next season and the team/player both feel like they're on the same page regarding what a contract would look like.
It would be really tight for teams like the jets, canucks and avs to re-sign him next season. They would have to be willing to part from other key roster players to fit him in.

Agreed. This is his last contract. He is going to free agency. So he’s a rental.
He’ll be a depth add for a cup run. So will Sean.
IMO they can each centre a 3rd line. Sean’s number this year say he does it better than Elias. For a rental you look at recency.
CGY and MTL are addressing same market. This is not ideal.
