I think humans can cope in a lot of different ways. For some, hockey is probably their mental reprieve. We heard about Tkachuk having a hard time during the pandemic, socially isolated and cut off from family. He was reported to just spend all his time at the rink, focusing on hockey to get by.
For other people, it seems the weight of a mentally tough situation takes away their ability to focus, and leads to poor performance at hockey, which probably just makes everything feel worse.
So maybe some were fighting through it because they didn't want to admit they should step away, or maybe staying with hockey was a big help to them.
