Assuming the freeze in upstream of the valve in the wall, is this the right idea? I thought it was best to open a tap to relieve a bit of pressure and let it starting flowing once you get a bit of melt. Closing the valve would do the opposite.
Main risk being wasting water once it starts going.
edit: oh just saw your sucky update. Sorry about that...sounds like closing the valve was a good thing!
