Thing is...goalies are weird.
If you are getting Vanecek back in a deal you're getting a goalie that's better suited to a split work load with Wolf than Markstrom would want.
If I'm not mistaken Markstrom has said he wants to play and likes to play a lot, he likely doesn't want to play 40-50 games and split it more with Wolf. If you're the Flames you probably also don't want to pay $6M for him just to play 40 games either.
Vanecek is having a down season this year but over three seasons from 20-21 to 22-23 he had a .909 save percentage over 131 GP, over the same three seasons Markstrom had a .907 over 165 games.
There is the potential you can add assets, save on your cap hit, get younger, and open up more opportunity for Wolf...without actually losing much performance from an on-ice perspective if Vanecek bounces back on a new team.
