It's one of those trades where you took a buy low chance and it was smart.
In the 2022 offseason nobody would have expected the Devils to trade Sharangovich.
He had 40 goals and 76 points in his first 130 NHL games and was 23 years old (25 goals and 48 points per 82).
Had you proposed Toffoli for Sharangovich + 3rd after the 2022 offseason you probably would have been called a homer.
But then after the 22-23 season you had Sharangovich have a rough season, Toffoli had a career season (with the team PP / offense structured around him) and all of a sudden it looks like a bad deal.
But really if you look at the bigger picture instead of just the previous 82 game season sample then things make sense, especially when you're the team receiving the younger player.
