1sts weren't available. They needed to trade a UFA before the season to get at least 1 of the 7 off the books. They took the best deal that they thought they could.

I do think that Conroy was very excited to acquire Sharangovich. If you watch any interviews from around the time, Conroy is gushing about the player. So, it is plausible that the Flames turned down offers which may have looked better to the media because they believed in Sharangovich.
