Campbell had a save percentage of 0.914, 0.921, and 0.915 in the 3 years before he came to EDM. He even had .928, and .924 seasons with the Kings before that. Do you think of him as anything other than a cap-dump at this point?
Even when you account for the volatility of the position, there's still the contract to consider. Markstrom was in a similar position in the off-season. The remaining 3 x $6M wasn't something any GM wanted, or wants to pay a sub .900 goalie.
Right now, Markstorm is worth the assets because he's massively outperforming his $6M price tag, and now there's talk about a potential salary retention to bring it down to $3M. It didn't seem likely, a couple of months ago, when you couldn't say the word rebuild. Now a Vezina caliber goaltender making $3M, could be something worth gambling a couple of firsts on, especially to a GM with a dire need of goaltending.
