It's pretty simple, he does have a right to do that. But the league should close that loophole, or a team should be provided a compensatory pick or something.
Much like a player being traded away after asking to leave or not re-sign, is boo'd when they return, I see no problem with fans boo'ing a player for these antics. That's their right.
