Extending him isn't a bad option because he's in the prime age range, and from all accounts he genuinely enjoys being in Calgary. There is value to that.

I agree. Flames should never aim to be a bottom garbage team. They can rebuild by moving out another 3-4 pieces. Many teams have impact players in the 1st round or 2nd round.
