There would be no league, if everyone got to pick where they played.

Professional sports are singular entities, in that all the teams are part of a single product. And without competitiveness, that product is garbage. As compensation for the horrific misdeed of being told where to live, the players are paid millions of dollars. If they want to live somewhere else, they are already free to (but most seem to accept the trade-off)

Junior hockey is a different argument, and I agree with you there.
