Perhaps I worded it wrong. Dom doesn't try to project the next contract, but attempts to quantify a player's level of play using production and analytics. His model shows that this season Hanifin is playing like a $5.9M defenseman. Last year it was around $7.8M, mostly because of better analytics/defense under Sutter.
I wasn't attmpting to predict the market, but Dom's numbers usually match my eye test, and are a quick reference for me. I'm sure someone will pay Hanifin with a number starting with a 7. At the same time, I don't think it will be a great signing unless Hanifin takes another step in improving his game.
