The Oilers tried to do a sign and trade deal with the Leafs for Hyman that summer, but weren't willing to pay the Leafs' asking price, so it didn't happen.
After the Stone trade, the CBA was amended to allow a player to sign an 8-year contract with the team who currently holds his rights even if that team didn't hold his rights at the last deadline so long as his current contract is valid through the next trade deadline (even if it's mid-season).
The Horvat trade last season is a perfect example: He was traded on January 30 and signed an 8-year extension with the Islanders on February 5. The trade deadline was March 3. Under the old rules, Horvat wouldn't have been able to sign an 8-year deal with the Islanders until after the trade deadline had passed.
Any player traded before the trade deadline this year can be signed to an 8-year extension by the team that acquires him any time after the trade.
