The GMs job is to win and not care about the balance sheet in four years when they are managing a contending team. If they don’t sign Nylander then they have to be okay with losing him and trying to replace him. They won’t find as good of a player.

Sooner or later GMs will figure out why players are so desperate for 8-year deals at the end of RFA or slightly later (they know they’re at their peak and the decline is about to start) and stop giving them out.

The GMs know why players want an 8 year contract, it isn’t an unknown fact that for the most part the players will underperform these contracts but the NHL is a zero sum game and all it takes is for one other GM to pony up and you lose your star UFA.
