Everyone knows Nylander's deal will suck at the end. That's the cost of doing business.

If only he'd sign a 5 year deal at $4MM AAV, life would be good.

Matthews wanted a shorter deal as he wants to sign an 8 year deal when its done. He was doing anyone any favours. Toronto would have preferred an 8 year deal. By signing him to 5, they have essentially agreed to a 13 year deal, unless he gets injured or regresses, and its unlikely they will want him to walk. With a 8 year deal initially, they may well have let him walk.
Matthews got a 4 year deal. They are getting all his best years and can let someone else pay the “look what he did” sucker’s deal.

Sooner or later GMs will figure out why players are so desperate for 8-year deals at the end of RFA or slightly later (they know they’re at their peak and the decline is about to start) and stop giving them out.
