A lot of other factors at play too. Other team's were holding onto their pics tightly last year and no competitors could afford to take on cap. The Flames have a bunch of solid depth pieces that are very hard to replace. It made sense to run it out one more year and see what was there.

The Flames are making the correct move now, by not giving out he long term vet contracts and selling the players off now.

What really F-ed the team was giving Huberdeau a contract that couldn't be bought out or traded. I wasn't there for negotiations obviously, but his contract seems like it has excessive restrictions given how much money they are paying him.
