I’m sure they tried - it’s widely known they had a futures based deal and a “win now” offer on table for Tkachuk and they went with the one Murray wanted.
At the end of the day, it’s Murray’s team. If he doesn’t want to do what the GM advises, the GM can resign.
Otherwise, the job is to carry out his orders.

I think this played a major role. I think they were pissed off and embarrassed and didn't want to look defeated. But that ego is what has lead them down such a terrible path that it's going to take them way longer to ever become elite again. If they would have taken a moment to properly assess things they would have realized they were in such a perfect situation to rebuild. Tkachuk for futures, Lindholm and Hanifin with 2 years left for futures, draft high in a very deep draft. No bad contracts on the books. Absolutely perfect start to a rebuild and you still have vets and good trade pieces in place to move over the next couple seasons. They really dropped the ball.
