Closest call I ever had was in high school. I was walking home and listening to my walkman pretty loudly. I was watching for the walk sign to come on at Mcleod and when it did, I just started walking. Some lady behind me grabbed my backpack and yanked me back just before a garbage truck went barrelling thru the red light. Inches.
I think she was more shaken up than I was, but a couple hours later, it sunk in and I was pretty freaked for a couple days after.
edit... And ten years later (just last year) I actually got hit by a garbage truck pretty much under the exact same circumstances. Luckily, it was just a dinky little mini garbage truck (they have mini garbage trucks in Rome for the narrow streets). He slammed the brakes and just bumped me enough to knock me over. I wonder if my ultimate demise will be caused by an ipod and a garbage truck.
