We haven’t seen goalies move, nor have we seen teams invest in them the way they used to. Add to that his significant contract and I think expectations around moving Markstrom for anything material should be tempered.

Goalies aren't perceived as having a lot of importance - until you don't have one, and need one because you have a potentially contending team. For a team like Jersey, a good goalie is a huge asset, it's literally their missing piece.
Also, I think fans get too focused on the ups and downs of player performance. Other teams don't care that Markstrom had an off year last year, that's last-year-Calgary's problem. They care what he is: a good starting goalie that can carry a 60 game load. He has value at $6M, and he has significant value at $4M for this plus 2 more years.
If the Devils were looking at Tanev and Markstrom, I would think Markstrom would be the more expensive acquisition (at $4M, maybe not at $6M).
