Everyone gets paid for production. If Greer gets 12-15 goals and plays with an edge and some energy, he will get a nice little contract somewhere instead of getting waived and league minimum.

It really doesn’t help at all. NHL salaries are not based on production. They are based on negotiations. Your Greer example is him negotiating a contract based on this year’s performance. Huberdeau’s was him negotiating based on. The performance in the past. How much do you pay a 114 point guy? That was the negotiation. All posts like that one are not offering any real insight. They are just wallowing in misery.
