Bertans is a bad contract but even with his player option it expires after next year. And even at his inflated amount, he is about 15% of the cap which on a basketball team is not quite so punitive.
The NBA owners negotiated hard to reduce the maximum length of contracts.
And of course the NFL doesn't have as much guaranteed money.
It's always the term that gets teams in trouble in the NHL. And having cap tied up in players that can't contribute isn't exactly great for the players as a whole either. Ultimately just less money out there for the other guys.
