He helps you get to the cap floor and still leaves flexibility for taking on bad contracts. That would help accomplish the goal of tanking if that is the plan. If it were me, I would prefer that be a shorter term than 4 years and maybe spread it around to a couple of players.

Unfortunately it's all hypothetical since he is signed for 8 years, not four, and no one gets an award for overpaying players in order to tank.

In any case, Merry Christmas Eve CP. I think I'll make a similar pledge based on Huberdeau's production for the game on the 27th as I did for the Kings game. I'm still not cheering for losses and would prefer a sharp turnaround for both him and the club.
Do they need to work around his contract? Yes, for sure they do. It will be a challenge at some point, no argument there. But, I doubt it changes much of what they do in the next 4-5 years. Provided the Glames look to rebuild/retool which I think they’re doing.

I said it earlier today but I think the next highest paid player the Flames sign is a home grown talent. So, that’s four years from now, minimum. (Just my bet and hope). It could be a decade from now.

The Flames might have the opportunity to eat some bad money in the next year or two but that leads to a whole other discussion. Which players are we talking about? How much money and how much term? Guys who make $8+, or less in certain instances, have trade protection. Are they waiving to come to Calgary who’s presumably rebuilding? In most cases, I don’t think so. So this supposed windfall of draft picks might not exist and Huberdeau’s contract could very well have nothing to do with that.

Just because the Flames might have cap space doesn’t gaurantee an avalanche of bad contracts and picks. The league, and its teams, the cap, and windows to win change every year.

Cheers and merry Christmas.
