Its almost hilarious to look at how screwed the Oilers are.

1) They have a poor prospect base, they don't have much that can step in with a cheap entry level contract that can make any kind of difference. After years of poor drafting with high picks and even worse in discovering talent with later draft picks the Oilers are at the point where they have no real strong future, and the prospects that they have won't get them a really strong return that they need.

2) They've positioned their window for this year and next for winning a cup, next year Draisaitl goes into the free agent frenzy period where the Oilers have to decide to keep him and risk losing him for nothing, or pushing hard for a new contract. And even as flawed as Draisaitl is, if they trade him for picks and prospects it might create a desire for McDavid to move on. But can you afford to resign Draisaitl who will command top dollars in this league? Think like $11 mill or more.

3) The Oilers are in cap hell, they can't get rid of their bad contracts like Campbell. They have literally no cap space for improving their lineup this year, and next year its still 14 players signed with $13 million in cap space. While the players they're shedding at the end of the year are pretty much crap. It means that they might merely reshuffle deck chairs on the titanic.

4) Their team is poorly constructed, and after a nice coach bump, they're back to playing the game their way and not the coaches way. Do they have an entitled locker room run by Draisaitl and McDavid? It looks like it.

5) You can roll out all the fancy stats that you want with me. But Captain they generate all these chances, and shots and blah blah blah. But the eye test is the ultimate judge, and on most nights, this team plays like they really don't care about their end. And that's how they're built.

6) Their top prospects, Holloway, Broberg, Boingualt the next big hope for them are non existant.

7) You have a dead ball GM in Holland who's retiring, and he's apt to do a panic move and leave a smoldering wreck behind.

In the words of Clubber Lang, you can't help but look at the Oilers, their draft strategy, their free agent strategy, their management strategy, their cap situation and the results on the ice and mutter "Dead Meat".
