In itself, that's not ridiculous. Jacques Lemaire was a point-per-game player on one of the highest-flying offensive teams of all time, then turned around and became perhaps the most stifling defensive coach of all time.
The real problem is that Paul Coffey isn't all that bright, which may be why he never got a sniff at an NHL coaching job until he was 62. Even then, it took the combination of a truly desperate GM and an owner who wants to collect
all the old boys in the club.
