As a train guy, I agree that there are plenty of James May types who are pleasant company so long as you find the subject matter at least a little bit interesting. Having something to prove isn't necessarily more common among young fans either, personally I've found that rail photographers tend to be more that way than other variants of train enthusiast, but again that's just my experience of it.
