Regarding the high IQ part, that is the type of player you want on your fourth line. When you are out on the penalty kill or are being overwhelmed by a dominating team, you need a smart body that can make sound hockey plays to relieve the pressure, or in AJ's case apply pressure in transition or on the attack.
Even if the hands and feet aren't elite level, good hockey sense can still get you a full career in the big leagues. Coaches love that type of utility player. I thought I saw in Duehr last year but this year is proving me wrong unfortunately.
