Huberdeau said his agent approached Zito about an extension and Zito said, yeah yeah sure, we'll contact you at a future date. They weren't exactly in a hurry to get it done, especially after the lousy playoffs he just had.
The Panthers future cap situation at the time meant that they were going to have to either trade a big name or let them walk. Once Tkachuk became available, it became an easy choice. Get rid of 2 expiring contracts, and bring in one guy who is a better player and younger. Maybe one of Weegar or Huberdeau would have ended up being a cap casualty, or maybe not, but it solved Zito from having to make that choice.
