I don't think where you draft matters, as long as you have the best scouts that will help you make the best selection for your organization. Obviously, if you're in the top 3 your selection is a little eaiser. Unless you've got a draft like 2014, where there wasn't really a consensus #1 pick.
2014 was our only selection in the top 5, where the top 4 was a general consensus. So, imo, we are exempt from calling that pick "bad" when in reality it was a great pick selecting the last of the top 4 in that draft.
Using that same draft, we have guys like Nylander at 8th, Ehlers at 9. Hell, even Pastrnak at 25th overall. 24 teams passed on him and he's arguably the best player in that draft. But focusing on the top 10 (I think Calgary likely ends up with a 5-9 pick), barring a Celebrini lottery win we just need to select the best player available. Our scouts have generally been pretty good at that. Can't be selecting someone like Dal Colle (don't know why he didn't pan out)/Virtanen (zero hockey IQ)/H. Fleury (average D-man)/N. Ritchie (because he's big). Nylander was my second favorite pick after Bennett, but it didn't make sense at the time to reach for him.
