In all the talk about Phillips and how top AHL guys who are a little older don't often make it, consider Michael Carcone with Arizone. Undrafted, he was signed by Vancouver and spent three years in their system.
He was then traded to Toronto for Josh Leivo, and then to the Senators with Connor Brown and Nikita Zaitsev for Ben Harpur, Cody Ceci, and Aaron Luchuk. No NHL games yet, and only okay stats in the AHL.
The Sens traded him to Nashville for Zachary Magwood, and then Arizone signed him as a free agent. He was waived twice, cleared both times, and got into 30 NHL games over 2 season, with 9 points.
Last year, he had a great year in the AHL, with 85 points in only 65 games, and this year, in the NHL, he has 13 goals in 25 games at the age of 27.
