It just doesn't seem like Dodgers are cash poor, so no real reason to do this. It's effectively the same as a 46m contract. The Blue Jays would have been much better off making this offer than 600 million paid 60m/year.

Looking into it more, it does seem like there is a possibility deferred salary gets paid where you are living, and not where you earned it, so it is entirely possible that he is doing this avoid California state taxes, which is all other can of worms.
