The seasons barely overlap. Would they show random baseball games in January to fill time? They are big on the Jays when the Jays play - they own 100% of the team. It was never about filling time slots. Considering the disaster their last NHL deal has been, the payroll dollars + the money required to fully capitalize on a draw the size of Ohtani would have meant significantly reduced ability and appetite to make as substantial a commitment to the NHL.

It’s entirely likely they still would have (and will) bid on NHL rights, it would have just been the nail in the coffin for anything even remotely close to their last deal.
