Can't imagine he'd go public talking about an opportunity and flexibility they've opened up if he didn't think they had that in their arsenal.
Just sets him and owner up to long foolish down the road.
If they can't retain it will get pretty obvious in the negotiations, and not hurt their position any more than not being able to retain in the first place.
