Similar to the removal of the Berlin Wall. Reagan gets so much credit for telling Gorbachev to "tear down this wall", but the wheels were already in motion for the events that occurred after.

I agree on the latter, but it was made clear that when Reagan assumed power happy fun time would be over for Iran. They wanted no part of it.
For the record I'm not a gushing Reagan fan either.
