Reagan was a strong president... no doubt about that. But I think the Iranians released the hostages when Reagan took over more out spite to Carter than out of respect of Reagan. It looked good on Reagan, but I don't believe he caused the end of the hostage crisis.
Similar to the removal of the Berlin Wall. Reagan gets so much credit for telling Gorbachev to "tear down this wall", but the wheels were already in motion for the events that occurred after.
