I would caution getting excited about the 96.7 million cap.
The last few lockouts have seen salary rollbacks, a change in the split and reducing the cap, keeping the cap flat for 4 years.
Wonder if Gary is gearing up for his retirement lockout going after contract lengths this next go around. It was the hill they would die on a few lockouts ago.

I’m fine with capping contract lengths.
Max-4 year ELCs
UFA 2-years after ELC
Max-5 year contracts
Max-3 year contracts if a player has never scored 40 points.
Exceptions:
-Major award winners (Hart, Ross, Lindsey, Norris, Richard, Selke, Vezina) are eligible to extend one additional year per award won during the time of the previous contract.
-Stanley Cup champion may offer extensions 1-year beyond max allowable to any RFA/UFA prior to the start of free agency.
We get more player movement, fewer boat anchors, less bitching about the salary cap, and the players get all their money sooner.
Pay these guys what they’re worth, when they’re worth it.
