I think we can safely argue that Tanev is notably better than Gudas, and will only be one year older. One extra year for a defenceman of Tanev's quality? I think that happens. Could it end up at 3 years? For sure, but I think in the world of free agency - Tanev getting a deal that takes him to 38 is just as likely.

A 33 year old gets a contract taking him to 36. I don't know that equals a 34 year old getting a contract taking him to 38. Not to mention the teams interested in Tanev will be a lot less cap-free than the Ducks (who still have $10M in space even now). Also, it was a dumb signing. How did Gudas get a raise from $2.5?
