Global warming, the edges of the seasons are going to get a lot longer and more varied before the -30 days completely disappear.

Last year there was an early snow and cold snap in late october, was pretty tame through christmas, it thawed out completely in january and there were maybe two weeks in february when it was proper frigid. Spring was pretty well on schedule, and everything was greening before Mother's day so you can make a case that spring arrived early.
Given what's shaping up to be an unprecedented El Nino, it looks like this winter will be even more tame and tolerable than last. Not even sure we're going to see the -20s until january at this rate (knock on wood).
